Hi Josh,
I don’t think you read the article properly. I never said that asking questions to prove someone’s identity is dangerous. In fact I am all for ID verification.
What I was trying to highlight is the fact that the ATO calls from private numbers, then expects the person to provide confidential information to verify who they are.
There have been many cases of people being tricked into giving their confidential information up to people who have called them from an unlisted number doing just this.

You’re an idiot. Suppose the ato calls ‘you’ and doesn’t ask any proof of identity questions, and ot turns out they’ve miskeyed your phone number, and proceed in discussing ‘your’ personal details to a complete stranger. Im pretty sure you’d be pissed about that also. And what better way to steal your details, if the ato were discussing them willy nilly with anyone who happens to answer the phone? Did you ever stop to think that they ask these questions to protect YOUR privacy?
